Aspirating Smoke Detection

Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) draws air samples from the protected area through a network of perforated pipes with precisely distributed sampling holes, and passes them through a central high-sensitivity smoke detector (100-10,000× more sensitive than ordinary detectors). ASD detects fire at the incipient stage, making it ideal for data centers, archives, and museums.

About this category

Aspirating smoke detection represents the highest technical detection sensitivity available. The design: a central detector unit holding an air-sampling pump, an ultra-sensitive laser smoke chamber (cloud-chamber or laser-based), a smart control processor, and a network of plastic pipes (PVC or ABS) run across the ceiling or protected atmosphere with precisely distributed sampling holes. Operating principle: the pump draws air from the site through the pipes and holes to the central detector, and the sample is continuously analyzed. Typical sensitivity: 0.001-0.03% obscuration/meter (versus 2-10% for ordinary detectors), 100-10,000× higher. Common classes: Class A (highest sensitivity, for data centers), Class B (medium), Class C (lowest, for ordinary applications). Coverage: one unit covers 500-2,000 m² via a 100-200 m pipe network. Data transmitted: four alarm levels (Alert, Action, Fire 1, Fire 2) by rising smoke concentration. Applications: data centers and server rooms (the most common use), telecom facilities, scientific laboratories, museums and heritage libraries, precision manufacturing, aviation facilities, and pharmaceutical labs. A difference from ceiling detectors: ASD detects fire before visible smoke; ceiling detectors need enough smoke. An extra advantage: installs at sites where ordinary detectors are impractical (very high ceilings, raised floors, inside equipment cabinets). A technical note: design needs airflow analysis to locate holes and ensure proper flow in each branch; review the product documentation and project requirements when specifying.
