Flame Detectors (UV/IR)

Flame Detectors detect fire directly through the radiation emitted by flames in the ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) spectrum. They differ fundamentally from smoke and heat detectors by a fast response time, documented in product data and test conditions, and are suited for fast-spreading hydrocarbon fires and flammable-liquid blazes.

About this category

Flame detectors are the ideal choice for high-risk industrial facilities where smoke or heat detectors are inadequate. The design: a device with specialized optical sensors (UV tubes or IR sensors based on silicon carbide or quartz), advanced signal processing to discriminate real flames from false sources, a protected optical lens, and a housing resistant to dust and water (IP66/IP67). Types: UV only (185-260 nm wavelength, very fast but prone to welding and electrical sparks), IR only (4.4 µm wavelength from combustion CO2, less affected by false sources), combined UV/IR (most reliable, dual confirmation lowers false alarms), triple IR (three IR bands for advanced discrimination), and visual flame imaging (smart camera with vision analytics). Principle: flames emit flickering UV radiation at 1-20 Hz distinct to combustion; the sensor detects this flicker and distinguishes it from steady light. Response time depends on the model and documented test conditions. Applications: oil and gas platforms, refineries, chemical plants, fuel depots, loading terminals, aviation hangars, power facilities, and hydrocarbon manufacturing. A substantive difference from smoke detectors: flame detectors see visible flames directly, need no smoke, and work outdoors. A technical note: effective detection range and angle are defined by the manufacturer (typically 20-60 m and 90-120° field of view). Model-specific approvals and hazardous-area listings differ by site type; review the product documentation and project requirements before procurement.
