Water Mist Systems

Water Mist Systems use water atomized into very fine droplets (under 1000 µm) that act by rapid cooling and local oxygen displacement around the flame. They can use far less water than conventional sprinklers in listed applications, making them ideal for sensitive-equipment protection, ships, heritage buildings, and museums.

About this category

Water mist systems combine water's effectiveness with clean-agent safety in one solution. The design: a high-pressure pump or propellant gas vessel (nitrogen or compressed air), high-pressure-rated steel piping, specialized mist nozzles with precise orifice geometry to produce droplets in the D99 < 1000 µm range, a fire-detection system, and a main control valve. Classified by pressure: low-pressure (below 12.5 bar), intermediate (12.5-35 bar), and high-pressure (above 35 bar). Suppression mechanism: rapid vaporization of fine droplets absorbs enormous heat (vaporization = 540 cal/g), reduces local oxygen concentration, and scrubs smoke in the mist. A key advantage: water use can be much lower than conventional sprinklers in tested and listed applications providing equivalent protection, reducing water damage and tank size; quantities are taken from the approved system design. Applications: data centers, telecom facilities, ships and ferries, heritage buildings and museums, energy facilities, road tunnels, engine rooms, and sensitive manufacturing. A difference from conventional sprinklers: mist absorbs heat more effectively due to large surface area, and uses less water. A difference from clean agents: mist is replenishable from the water network, has lower operating cost, and is environmentally benign. A technical note: design requires hydraulic analysis for proper coverage; nozzles differ fundamentally from conventional sprinklers and are not interchangeable. Model-level approvals and allowable applications vary; review the product documentation and the project's marine or land requirements before procurement.
