Fire-Rated Sealants
Fire-Rated Sealants are used to seal openings and cracks in fire-rated walls around pipes, cables, and electrical ducts in buildings. They block flame and smoke spread through penetrations for a defined period (30-240 minutes). They differ from ordinary sealants by being tested as part of an approved firestop system; some types expand under heat to fill voids, and the rating applies to the tested system.

About this category
Fire-rated sealants solve a common building problem: an EI 120-rated wall loses value if it carries an open hole for a pipe or cable. Materials: intumescent sealants (expand 5-30× under 180-200°C to fill voids), ablative sealants (progressively ablate to form an insulating layer), silicone fire sealants (flexible, tolerating movement and vibration), elastomeric sealants (water-resistant, for bathroom penetrations), and fire-rated foam (expanding foam with fire resistance, for larger voids). Forms: cartridges for hand-gun application, bulk pails for large runs, pre-formed pillows for cable bundles, and intumescent strips for precision gaps. Common performance ratings define resistance time (EI30 to EI240), penetration type (pipes, cables, ducts), and substrate (block walls, gypsum, concrete). Applications: electrical cable penetrations through fire walls, water and drainage pipes across floors, small HVAC pipes, structural expansion joints, telecom duct penetrations, and fire-wall cracks. An important technical note: the whole sealing system is tested together (sealant + substrate + penetration), so one material cannot be substituted for another without verifying the model-specific acceptance file. A substantive difference from ordinary sealants: fire sealants are tested within approved systems and intumescent types expand to fill voids, while ordinary ones may shrink or burn away. Maintenance: annual visual check to confirm seal integrity, re-application on any damage.
