CO/CO2 Monitors
CO/CO2 Monitors measure carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide — two fundamentally different indicators of different problems in indoor air: CO is a toxic gas from incomplete combustion and engines; CO2 indicates ventilation level at typical indoor concentrations and becomes hazardous at high concentrations. Essential in buildings, parking garages, classrooms, and schools.

About this category
CO/CO2 monitors combine two measurements of different natures but related to air quality. CO (carbon monoxide): a colorless, odorless toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion (engines, gas stoves, candles, smoking, charcoal), which binds hemoglobin and prevents oxygen transport. Alarm thresholds are set per site risk assessment. CO2 (carbon dioxide): a naturally occurring gas that rises indoors from human respiration and combustion; at typical indoor levels its concentration is an excellent ventilation indicator, but it becomes hazardous at high concentrations — elevated levels may be linked to comfort and productivity complaints in buildings. Detection technologies: electrochemical for CO (cheaper, for ordinary applications), NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) for CO2 (most common, long life), and MOS semiconductors (for homes, cheaper but less accurate). Applications: underground parking garages (CO from exhaust), commercial kitchens (CO from gas cooking), schools and classrooms (CO2 as a ventilation indicator), offices (CO2 for productivity), heating facilities (CO from boilers), industrial combustion facilities, homes using natural gas or coal, and agricultural greenhouses (CO2 as a plant nutrient). An important technical note: CO and CO2 share similar names but are completely different gases — do not confuse them; CO is toxic even at low concentrations, while CO2 is a ventilation indicator at typical levels and a hazard at high concentrations. Measurement ranges and accuracy specifications vary between models — review the product documentation and application requirements.
