Fixed Gas Sensors
Fixed Gas Sensors are units installed at defined points in a facility to monitor concentration continuously, 24/7 without human intervention. They draw permanent mains power and send a signal to a central controller in the control room. They differ fundamentally from portable detectors by being part of the facility's permanent safety infrastructure rather than personal tools.

About this category
Fixed gas sensors are the sensing element of permanent industrial gas-detection systems. The design: a weather-resistant steel or aluminum enclosure, wall or pipe mounted, an internal sensing element (catalytic, electrochemical, IR, or semiconductor by gas), signal conditioning electronics, an output to the controller (traditional analog or digital Modbus/HART), a dust filter protecting the sensor, and sometimes a local LED indicator. Sensor technologies: catalytic bead (for combustibles, cheaper but consumed over time), electrochemical (for toxic gases, high accuracy), infrared (more accurate for CO2 and hydrocarbons, long life, higher cost), and semiconductor (for organic compounds, common in domestic detectors). Environmental protection: various IP ratings by use, hazardous-area approvals for oil-and-gas applications. Installation: at a height set by the target gas, its density, the leak scenario and ventilation — heavier-than-air gases such as H2S and propane settle low so sensors mount low (LEL is a measurement unit for flammable gas, not a mounting rule); ammonia and hydrogen are light and rise so sensors mount near the ceiling. Applications: oil and gas refineries, chemical plants, wastewater treatment, enclosed car parks (CO), laboratories, industrial refrigeration (ammonia), and storage facilities. A substantive difference from portable units: fixed sensors provide continuous monitoring without human action; portables protect a moving worker. Technical listings and hazardous-area ratings vary between models — review the product documentation and site requirements.
