Laser Safety Eyewear

Laser Safety Eyewear protects the eyes from the high-energy coherent radiation of industrial and medical laser systems. It differs fundamentally from ordinary safety eyewear because each lens is designed for a specific wavelength and a calculated optical density (OD). The glasses are not interchangeable across laser types; the correct eyewear for one laser type may be useless against another.

About this category

Laser safety eyewear differs from every other protective eyewear class because it is tuned to a specific wavelength. Every laser operates at a defined wavelength (CO2 at 10 600 nm, Nd:YAG at 1064 nm, argon at 488-514 nm, fiber lasers at 1030-1070 nm, He-Ne at 633 nm), and the lenses carry an absorptive or reflective filter designed for a defined wavelength range. Correct eyewear for CO2 offers no protection against Nd:YAG. The critical value is optical density (OD), a logarithmic attenuation measure; OD = 7 attenuates radiation to 10⁻⁷ of its original intensity. Required OD depends on laser power and operator distance. The wavelength and OD are printed clearly on each lens, and the eyewear must be re-verified if the laser system changes and replaced if any coating scratch is observed. Applications include laser metal cutting (CO2, fiber), laser welding, medical endoscopy, medical laser equipment, and physics and semiconductor research. Specifications follow EN 207/208 (Europe) and ANSI Z136.1 (US).
