Welding Shields
Welding Shields are specialized face shields fitted with a dark filter at a defined shade to protect the eyes and face from arc radiation. They differ from clear face shields by carrying a Shade 8-13 filter instead of a clear lens. They are used when performing welding and are not substitutes for welding helmets that give full head protection.

About this category
Welding shields differ fundamentally from general face shields because they are built specifically to protect the eyes from the UV and IR electromagnetic radiation of a welding arc, which can cause a painful UV injury to the eye surface (arc eye or welder's flash) within seconds of unprotected exposure, while intense visible and IR light can also damage the retina. Shade selection is critical: take it from the manufacturer's or authority's table (e.g. ANSI Z49.1 or EN 169) for the process (MMA, MIG, TIG or plasma cutting) and current; it typically starts around Shade 8 at low current and rises with current. Hand-held welding shields have a fixed lens and are held in one hand, which limits continuous welding use. Headgear-mounted welding shields free both hands and suit extended welding sessions. Some models include an integrated auto-darkening filter that switches from Shade 3-4 (clear vision) to the selected shade on arc strike within 0.1 ms. A fundamental difference from full welding helmets: welding shields do not provide full head impact protection. Specifications follow EN 379 for welding filters and ANSI Z87.1 by model.
