Electrical Hazard Footwear

Electrical Hazard (EH) Footwear provides supplementary insulation against accidental electrical contact with an energized surface. It differs from standard boots by an insulating outsole tested at 18 000 V in dry conditions. EH is a backup layer only and does not replace insulating gloves or insulating mats for live electrical work.

About this category

EH footwear differs fundamentally from ESD/antistatic shoes; EH blocks current flow to ground (insulation), while ESD dissipates static slowly. The ASTM F2413 EH rating tests the outsole at 18 000 V for 1 minute in dry conditions. The boot must remain fully dry to maintain insulation; moisture substantially degrades it. Electrical-hazard (EH) insulation is a separate rating; S3 properties (protective toe, puncture-resistant midsole, WRU) apply only where the product data confirms them. The upper is tanned leather and the outsole is low-conductivity polyurethane or rubber. Pre-use visual inspection and replacement on outsole damage are required. An important technical note: EH is secondary protection only; direct live-circuit work requires insulating gloves to ASTM D120 and insulating mats to ASTM D178, not EH footwear alone. Applications: electricians, control-panel maintenance, distribution-substation servicing, telecommunication technicians, and electrical installations in dry sites. Best practice combines EH, insulating gloves, and insulating mats. Specifications follow ASTM F2413 (EH) and CSA Z195 (Ω symbol).
