Safety Boots S2

S2 Safety Boots combine S1 features (200 J protective toe, energy-absorbing heel, antistatic properties) with water-resistant uppers (WRU, designated WPA in the 2022 edition); fuel-oil resistance (FO) is an optional test stated where approved. They do not have a puncture-resistant midsole (that is the role of S1P and S3). They suit work with moisture or light water splash without puncture hazards, such as wet food plants and laboratories.

About this category

S2 differs from S1 in one essential feature: a Water Resistant Upper (WRU). It is measured per EN ISO 20344 by testing water penetration and absorption of the upper material, which differs from whole-footwear water resistance (WR). The property is typically achieved with wax-treated leather or an embedded PU layer. S2 does not add puncture resistance (P), so it is not suited to construction sites or warehouses with nails. It also differs from S3, which combines WRU with P. The protective toe is the same 200 J, the outsole is oil-resistant, and the heel is energy-absorbing. S2 is common in wet food plants (packaging, bakeries), pharmaceutical plants, industrial cleaning operations, dyeing and fermentation facilities, and laboratories. An important technical note: WRU does not mean fully waterproof like S4/S5 rubber boots; it is resistance to water splash and moisture only. If the site has standing water or immersion, S4 or S5 should be chosen. Selection considers upper material (leather or textile), toe cap material (steel or composite), and ventilation. Specifications follow EN ISO 20345 (with test methods in EN ISO 20344).
