Hard Hats with Welding Visors

Hard Hats with Welding Visors combine, in one system, an industrial safety helmet that protects the head from falling objects and impact with a flip-up welding visor that protects the eyes and face from arc radiation and sparks. They are used on construction sites, refineries and steel structures where welding is carried out while the falling-object hazard remains. They vary by filter type (fixed-shade or auto-darkening) and by how the visor mounts to the helmet.

About this category

This category differs from stand-alone welding helmets in that the outer shell is an industrial safety helmet approved for impact and falling-object protection, fitted with a flip-up welding visor; stand-alone welding helmets mainly protect the face and eyes and are not normally classed as head-protection hard hats. The system has three parts: the safety helmet (to EN 397 or ANSI Z89.1), an adapter or side bracket that fits the helmet slots, and a welding visor with a fixed-shade filter (EN 169) or an auto-darkening filter (EN 379) in a frame to EN 175. The visor and adapter must be approved by the manufacturer for that helmet model, since mixing brands can void the system approval. The shade number is taken from the manufacturer's or authority's table (e.g. EN 169 or ANSI Z49.1) for the welding process and current. Selection considers the weight and balance of the assembly to limit neck fatigue, ease of raising and lowering the visor with a gloved hand, use of a chin strap when working at height, and wearing safety glasses under the visor for protection from flying particles when it is raised. The helmet shell is inspected per the manufacturer's instructions, and outer cover lenses are replaced when scratched or spatter-coated. Applications: structural steel welding on construction sites, maintenance work in refineries and power plants, and field pipeline welding. Stand-alone welding helmets (under Welding & Cutting → Welding PPE) and hand-held welding shields (under Eye & Face Protection) are excluded from this category.
