Cartridges & Filters

Respirator Cartridges & Filters are the replaceable component in half-face, full-face, and PAPR respirators. Cartridges differ by contaminant type: particulates (P100), organic vapors (OV), acid gases (AG), ammonia (AM), formaldehyde, or mixed combinations. Selection follows the chemical present, its concentration, and exposure duration.

About this category

Correct cartridge selection is the single most important choice in respiratory protection because it defines the actual protection delivered. Cartridges differ in internal sorbent material. Activated carbon adsorbs organic vapors such as acetone, xylene, and toluene. Copper-impregnated carbon neutralizes ammonia. Physical filters (HEPA/P100) capture 99.97% of particulates. US NIOSH colour coding includes, for example, black for organic vapour, white for acid gas, yellow for organic vapour plus acid gas, green for ammonia and magenta for P100 filters; selection must follow the manufacturer's guide and NIOSH approval, not colour alone. European EN 14387 uses A (organic), B (inorganic gases), E (sulfur dioxide and other acid gases), K (ammonia), AX (low-boiling-point substances). Actual End-of-Service-Life depends on concentration, usage duration, and temperature; some cartridges carry a color-change ESLI indicator. Use a documented change schedule or an approved ESLI based on contaminant, concentration, temperature and breathing rate rather than waiting for breakthrough odor; any odor or breathing resistance means leaving the area immediately. Store cartridges in sealed packaging before use and cover ports between uses. Specifications follow NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 and EN 14387 by model.
