Disposable Respirators (N95/FFP)

Disposable N95/FFP respirators are the simplest form of respiratory protection, filtering particles and aerosols at a defined efficiency. N95 (US standard) differs from FFP1/FFP2/FFP3 (European standard) in rating and percentage. They do not protect against gases or vapors. Replace after each shift or on moisture buildup or breathing resistance.

About this category

Disposable respirators differ in filtration efficiency and Assigned Protection Factor (APF). US N95 captures 95% of non-oil particles at the 0.3 micron hardest-to-trap size. European FFP1 captures 80%, FFP2 94%, and FFP3 99%. An important distinction: N95 is NIOSH-certified under strict testing, while KN95 is Chinese-certified and some models may not meet claimed performance. N95/FFP2 serves industrial dust, hospital bio-aerosols, and welding particulates. The filter class is selected by contaminant, concentration, occupational exposure limit (OEL) and assigned protection factor (APF) within a respiratory protection programme. None of these respirators protect against gases or vapors; those hazards are the role of cartridge respirators. Correct use requires a Fit Test to confirm no air leakage around the face. Models with an exhalation valve are more comfortable but do not protect others from the wearer's exhalation (unsuitable in infectious environments). Replace when moisture accumulates, surface is contaminated, or the elastic deteriorates. Specifications follow NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 and EN 149.
