Emergency Escape Masks

Emergency Escape Masks are designed for one-time use during an unexpected emergency for 15-60 minutes. They differ fundamentally from regular respirators because they are not for routine work; their only function is to help a worker escape a hazardous environment. Types include smoke escape hoods, chemical emergency masks, and oxygen emergency masks.

About this category

Emergency escape masks are a preventive investment used once in the unit's life (after activation or at shelf-life expiry). They differ from regular respirators in three ways: duration (15-60 minutes versus hours), fast-response design (one-piece unit donned in 20-30 seconds with minimal training), and mandatory single use. Main types: smoke escape hoods carry a filter that captures smoke and carbon monoxide for hotel and high-rise building fire escape; they supply no oxygen and are not suitable for oxygen-deficient atmospheres. Chemical emergency masks carry multi-purpose cartridges for refinery and petrochemical-plant toxic-gas release scenarios. Oxygen emergency masks carry a chemical oxygen generator (KO2) that produces O2 by reacting with exhaled CO2 — used in mines and underground metro stations. Masks are stored at strategic points near potential hazards, with shelf lives of 5-15 years by type. Worker training on both location and donning is mandatory. A technical note: these masks are not for routine work and do not replace SCBA for maintenance or rescue operations. Specifications follow NIOSH, EN 403 (filtering escape hoods for smoke and gas), EN 1146 (compressed-air escape sets) and EN 13794 (oxygen-generating escape sets).
