Half-Face Respirators

Half-Face Respirators cover the nose and mouth with replaceable cartridges that vary by contaminant. They differ from disposable respirators by being durable, reusable units that accept filters or cartridges selected for the hazard; protection depends on the fitted filter, not on the facepiece shape. They protect against particles, organic vapors, acid gases, ammonia, and formaldehyde depending on the cartridge selected.

About this category

Half-face respirators differ from disposable respirators by being durable, washable, reusable units with cartridge options matched to each job. The unit comprises a silicone or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) facepiece that seals around nose and mouth, a central exhalation valve, and two cartridge mounts. Cartridge type varies with contaminant: OV (Organic Vapor) for solvent and paint vapors, AG (Acid Gas) for acids such as hydrogen chloride, P100 for particulates at 99.97% efficiency, and multi-gas for mixed contaminants. Under OSHA, the Assigned Protection Factor (APF) is 10, so half-face respirators are suited to exposure up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). Periodic fit testing (annual under OSHA), pre-use visual inspection, daily cleaning, and cartridge replacement on a data-based change schedule or an approved End-of-Service-Life Indicator (ESLI) are required; any odor or irritation means leaving the area immediately. Common uses are spray painting, chemical cleaning, welding, and solvent handling. They do not protect in oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres; those are SCBA and SAR territory. Specifications follow NIOSH and EN 140.
