Descent Devices
Descent Devices let a worker descend at a controlled rate from height to ground. They are used in emergency evacuation from towers or tall buildings, or as part of a rescue system. They differ from fall-arrest systems by being built for controlled descent after an event rather than for preventing one.

About this category
Descent devices solve the problem of safely getting a worker down from height without complex external intervention. The design: a metal unit with a controlled-friction mechanism (typically a friction wheel with automatic braking) that attaches to the harness via a connector, with a rope that passes through it anchored at the top. On automatic devices, descent proceeds on activation at a defined rate (typically 1-2 m/s) within the model's rated weight range. Model types: auto-descent devices that descend automatically at a fixed speed without control (as used for hotel evacuation), and controlled descent devices that let the user manage speed and stop. Range is typically 50-180 m. Applications: emergency evacuation from hotels and tall buildings, tower technicians descending after maintenance, rescue from stalled suspended platforms, and industrial structure rescue teams. A substantive difference from SRLs: an SRL arrests a fall when it occurs and activates automatically (unlike a restraint system, which prevents reaching the edge), while a descent device is actively used by the worker to lower themselves after an event. An important technical note: some models are single-use for emergency evacuation; others are reusable with annual inspection. User training is mandatory. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.4 and EN 341.
