Lockout Tagout (LOTO)

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) prevents equipment startup during maintenance by physically isolating energy sources and placing a warning tag. The category includes individual colored padlocks, lockout devices for electrical switches, air valves, and hydraulic sources, warning tags, complete LOTO kits, wall-mounted LOTO stations, and group lockout boxes. LOTO applies within the scope of the governing standard and jurisdiction (e.g. OSHA 1910.147 in the US), project requirements and local regulations to prevent inadvertent re-energization.

About this category

Equipment restart during maintenance causes serious industrial injuries and fatalities, so LOTO is the primary defense against that hazard. Individual padlocks are color-coded by department, trade, or shift, with bodies of non-conductive thermoplastic, aluminum, or steel (and non-conductive shackles for electrical work); each lock is keyed to its user and keys are never shared. Breaker lockouts fit circuit breakers of several sizes and prevent movement. Valve lockouts hold valves in the OFF position and vary by valve type (ball, knife, butterfly). Hydraulic valve lockouts stop fluid flow. Cable lockouts use a steel cable that wraps around several energy sources and locks them together. Warning tags carry the worker's name and the maintenance activity; tags warn but do not themselves lock. Complete LOTO kits bundle padlocks, tags, valve devices, and cables in a portable bag for each technician. Wall-mounted LOTO stations keep organized stock near maintenance points. A documented LOTO program, worker training, and annual procedure review are mandatory. Specifications follow OSHA 1910.147 and ANSI Z244.1.
