About this category
Road signs differ from in-facility safety signs because they must be readable from long distance and at speed. Warning signs (red-bordered triangle under the Vienna system, or yellow diamond under MUTCD) flag an upcoming hazard such as a sharp bend or intersection and are placed ahead of it at a distance set by road speed and local specifications (often 100-250 m). Regulatory signs (red-bordered circle, or blue circle for mandatory signs) set speed limits, stop signs, no entry, and mandatory movement directions. Guidance signs (green rectangle for highways, blue for services, white for secondary roads) show destinations and distances. Work-zone signs (orange) warn of temporary construction and maintenance sites, typically present for days or weeks. Variable Message Signs (VMS) display remotely programmable messages such as "Speed Limited" or "Incident 1 km ahead" and serve highways and large venues. Materials include aluminum with reflective vinyl overlay for outdoor fixed signs and molded plastic for portable units. Reflective sheeting is typically Class 3 (High Intensity Prismatic) for highways. Specifications follow MUTCD, EN 12899, and the Vienna Convention.
