Chisels & Punches
The Chisels and Punches category covers hand tools with a hardened cutting edge or metal tip, struck with a hammer to shape materials, create holes or mark the position of nails and fasteners in installation and maintenance work. The category includes wood chisels, cold chisels and specialized chisels for various materials, together with center punches and drift punches. These tools work in combination with a suitable hammer and are not self-actuated. Specifications are model-specific.

About this category
Chisels and punches are hand tools that work in combination with a hammer: energy from the hammer blow passes through the tool body to its cutting edge or pointed tip to produce the required effect in the material. Wood chisels are made with a thin cutting edge and a wooden or plastic handle for precise wood cutting and shaping. Cold chisels are made from tool steel whose grade and heat treatment vary by model, and are used for cutting nails, bolts, sheet metal and light concrete per manufacturer specification. Center punches are used to create a precise starting point for drill holes on metal surfaces, while drift punches are used to drive out embedded fasteners or align components through openings. Hardness and heat-treatment characteristics vary by model, and the manufacturer defines suitability for repeated impact and resistance to chipping. Chisels and punches are not substitutes for screwdrivers, machining tools or precision drills, and must not be used on live electrical work. Pneumatic and powered chisels are excluded from this category as they are outside its scope. Industrial buyers select models based on the target material, the type of effect required, the frequency of use, and site environmental conditions including humidity, corrosion and temperature exposure, as well as grip ergonomics for repetitive strike applications.
