Impact Drivers

The Impact Drivers category covers power tools that combine rotation with rotational impact to deliver high driving torque on fasteners, used for structural fastening and equipment assembly where fasteners require torque beyond the capability of ordinary drills. Impact drivers are available in cordless and corded models. An impact driver is not equivalent to a standard drill, a rotary hammer or an impact wrench; each is intended for a different application. Specifications are model-specific.

About this category

Impact drivers are power tools that combine continuous rotation with an internal rotational impact mechanism that generates rapid successive rotational hammer blows when the fastener resists rotation. Torque is transferred to a standard hex collet that holds driver bits, which is different from an ordinary drill chuck. Impact drivers are used to drive large screws, long lag bolts and structural fasteners, and complete the fastening task without transmitting as much reactive torque to the operator's hand as a standard drill would, because of their impact action. An impact driver differs from a standard drill in that it uses a hex collet rather than a drill chuck and generates rotational impact; it differs from a rotary hammer in that rotary hammers deliver axial impact rather than rotational impact; and it differs from an impact wrench in that an impact wrench uses a square socket drive rather than a hex collet. None of these tools is intrinsically superior to the others: each is designed for a specific task. Impact drivers are supplied at different cordless voltages and with varying maximum torque ratings. Batteries, chargers and driver bits are excluded from this category. Industrial buyers select impact driver models based on prevalent site fasteners, required torque, the standardized battery platform, and site conditions including vibration and sound exposure during operation.
