Confined Space Intercoms
Confined Space Intercoms are dedicated communication systems linking the worker inside the confined space to the attendant outside, built to operate in environments with sound and physical constraints. They differ from radios by the fixed nature of the link, and from ATEX radios by a design dedicated to entry conditions. Essential within the confined-space entry attendant structure.

About this category
Confined-space intercoms address a specialized attendant-monitoring challenge: continuous communication with the worker in environments where radios may fail due to metallic barriers. The design: a portable or fixed intercom unit outside, a communication cable extending into the confined space, a headset and microphone worn by the worker on helmet or belt, sometimes a speaker system with improved sensitivity, and clear audio controls. Types by configuration: wired systems connecting one worker, multi-user systems connecting a whole team, systems integrated with visual monitoring (camera plus intercom), and integrated ATEX systems for ignition-hazard environments. Uses: tank and vessel entry, inspection work inside tunnels, onshore and offshore oil platforms, petrochemical processing facilities, and sewage sites. Operating notes: training entry teams and attendants in communication, pre-use cable-integrity checks, verifying secure headset and microphone attachment, and compatibility with site classification requirements in hazard zones. A substantive difference from radios: wired intercoms provide continuous communication even in environments where radios cannot penetrate, but are fixed in installation. Model specifications, cable length, work-clothing compatibility, and environmental classification are reviewed in the product documentation before selection.
