Disinfectants
Disinfectants are chemical formulations carrying registered claims to kill or reduce bacteria, viruses and fungi on surfaces at the concentration and contact time stated on the label. They differ from general purpose cleaners, which only remove soil, from hand sanitizers and from sterilants. Selection is based on the organisms named in the claims, target surface, form (concentrate, ready-to-use, wipes or spray) and local regulatory registration.

About this category
Disinfectants are chemical formulations carrying documented claims to reduce or kill populations of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) on compatible surfaces per the product's design and registration with competent authorities. Each formulation carries efficacy claims specific to a defined set of microorganisms under defined conditions of concentration, contact time and surface nature, with these claims defined in the product's official label. Models differ in active formulation across multiple chemistries, in regulatory registration by country, and in form between concentrates, ready-to-use liquids, impregnated wipes and sprays. A strict distinction must be maintained between several concepts: a general purpose cleaner is not a disinfectant, and a disinfectant is not an instrument sterilant, because sterilization requires total elimination of all microorganisms including spores and demands more stringent conditions. A disinfectant also differs from a sanitizer in the target reduction level per regulatory definitions. A product being a disinfectant does not imply suitability for healthcare settings or food-contact unless the product's label states so. General purpose cleaners, hand sanitizers and medical antiseptics are excluded from this category. Industrial buyers select disinfectants based on documented claims, the target surface and the product's registration in the country.
