General Purpose Cleaners

General purpose cleaners are chemical formulations for removing light soils, stains and grease from compatible surfaces in offices, facilities and plants, supplied ready-to-use or as concentrates for dilution. They differ from disinfectants in removing soil without disinfection claims, and from heavy-duty degreasers aimed at industrial oils. Selection is based on soil type, compatible surfaces stated on the label, concentration and pH, and pack size.

About this category

General purpose cleaners are chemical cleaning formulations designed to remove light soils, stains and greases from a range of documented compatible surfaces per the product's instructions. Models differ in active formulation, concentration between ready-to-use cleaners and concentrates requiring dilution, packaging between small bottles and large drums, fragrance classification, and pH per the product's design. It must be emphasized that general purpose cleaners are fundamentally different from disinfectants: cleaners remove visible soils and organic matter mechanically and chemically, while disinfectants kill or reduce microorganisms per documented, authorized claims. A product being a cleaner therefore does not imply it achieves disinfection or microbial reduction unless the product carries registered authorized claims to that effect. Suitability for every surface should not be assumed, as compatibility varies by formulation and surface type (metal, wood, plastic, stone, textile), and compatible surfaces are defined on the product label. Disinfectants, glass cleaners, industrial heavy-duty degreasers and restroom cleaners are excluded from this category. Industrial buyers select general purpose cleaners based on the target soil type, the documented compatible surface, product form, packaging and safety requirements.
