Clean Agent Extinguishers
Clean Agent Extinguishers use halogen-substitute gases (such as FE-36, Novec 1230, or HFC-227ea) that leave no residue and do not contaminate equipment. They differ from CO2 units by requiring lower effective concentrations and therefore being safer around people. Designed for sensitive-equipment protection in data centers, laboratories, and industrial control centers.

About this category
Clean agents are modern replacements for the earlier halons banned under the Montreal Protocol for ozone depletion. The design: a lightweight steel or aluminum cylinder holding a liquid agent under nitrogen propellant pressure. Suppression mechanism: mainly heat absorption from the flame for agents such as HFC-227ea and FK-5-1-12, with some chemical inhibition of the combustion chain reaction. Common types: FE-36 (HFC-236fa) for portables, HFC-227ea (FM-200) for larger systems, and FK-5-1-12 (trade name Novec 1230) with documented supplier environmental data. A substantive difference from CO2: each clean agent works at a specific design concentration, usually lower than CO2, and is used in occupied spaces only within the approved exposure limits (NOAEL) and evacuation procedures for that agent. Applications: data centers and server rooms, industrial control rooms, laboratories, precision measurement equipment, museums and archives, sensitive electrical cabinets, and telecommunications equipment. Throw range 3-6 m, discharge 10-25 s. Common sizes 2-6 kg. A key advantage: longer evacuation window before affecting users, no residue, no corrosion. A technical note: at prolonged high heat exposure the agent can produce acidic decomposition products (HF), so ventilation after use is required. Specifications follow NFPA 10, NFPA 2001, EN 3, and ISO 14520.
