CO2 Extinguishers

CO2 Extinguishers work on flammable-liquid (Class B) fires and live electrical equipment (Class C in the US system) using liquefied CO2 under high pressure. They differ fundamentally from dry powder units by leaving no residue, making them ideal for electrical and electronic equipment. Common sizes range from 2 kg to 9 kg with a large discharge horn.

About this category

CO2 extinguishers combine three protection advantages in one unit: liquid-fire effectiveness, electrical safety, and no residue. The design: a thick-walled steel cylinder holding CO2 as a liquid under high pressure (55-60 bar at ambient temperature), a quick-release valve, and a flexible hose ending in a large discharge horn that lets the gas expand gradually. Suppression mechanism: local oxygen dilution to below 15% around the fire, and partial cooling from the gas expansion (horn temperature drops to -78°C). Throw range is 1-3 m only (shorter than powder because of velocity loss), discharge time 8-25 s. Applications: server rooms and data centers, electrical control panels, laboratories, industrial kitchens (for electrical equipment), and paint and finishing shops. A key advantage: zero residue, no contamination of sensitive equipment. A critical technical note: use is prohibited in small unventilated confined spaces because oxygen displacement can asphyxiate the user. The discharge horn becomes very cold during use, so it must be held by the insulated handle to avoid frostbite. Maintenance: monthly weight check (replace if more than 10% weight loss), internal inspection every 5 years, and periodic hydrostatic testing per the local reference, cylinder type and its guide (5 years for CO2 cylinders under NFPA 10). Specifications follow NFPA 10, EN 3, and UL 154.
