Dry Powder Extinguishers (ABC/BC)

Dry Powder Extinguishers are among the most widely used in industrial and commercial settings. Powders split into two types: ABC (monoammonium phosphate) for Class A, B, and C fires, and BC (sodium or potassium bicarbonate) for Class B and C only. Portable sizes range from 1 kg to 12 kg, with wheeled units from 25 kg upwards.

About this category

Dry powder extinguishers are the multipurpose solution for sites that may face several fire classes. The design: a steel cylinder loaded with a fine chemical powder (10-75 µm particle size) under nitrogen propellant pressure (12-18 bar). On activation, powder is pushed through a hose to a nozzle that disperses it over the fire. The suppression mechanism: chemical interruption of the heat chain reaction, a barrier between fuel and oxygen (especially ABC), and some cooling. Types: ABC powder (monoammonium phosphate) melts at fire temperatures to form a sticky layer that smothers Class A; BC powder (sodium or potassium bicarbonate) is more effective on Class B liquids but does not work on A. Throw range 4-8 m, discharge 10-40 s depending on size. Applications: maintenance workshops, fuel stations, construction sites, industrial vehicles, factories, and multi-stock warehouses. A key feature: a wide operating temperature range, in many models down to about -30°C or -40°C and up to +60°C depending on the model rating. An important technical note: powder leaves a residue that contaminates sensitive equipment, so it is not preferred in data centers, control rooms, or precision laboratories; clean-agent extinguishers are used instead. Maintenance: monthly inspection, with internal maintenance and periodic hydrostatic testing per the adopted code, extinguisher type and manufacturer's guide. Specifications follow NFPA 10, EN 3-7, and UL 299.
