Foam Extinguishers

Foam Extinguishers (AFFF or AR-AFFF) work on Class A and B fires by forming a foam blanket that isolates the fuel from air while cooling it. They differ from water extinguishers by containing a foam concentrate that produces an insulating layer which floats on flammable liquids. Common sizes are 6 and 9 L for industrial workshops, fuel storage, and filling stations.

About this category

Foam extinguishers extend protection to flammable liquids that water extinguishers cannot cover. The design: a 6-9 L cylinder holding a water–foam concentrate mix at 3-6% proportion depending on type, with a pressure system similar to water units. On activation the mix passes through a foam aspirator that adds air to generate a soft foam exiting the nozzle. Types (check local restrictions on fluorinated PFAS foams and fluorine-free F3 alternatives): AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) for non-alcohol liquids and AR-AFFF (Alcohol-Resistant) for alcohol and polar solvents. The action is threefold: a foam blanket that isolates oxygen, surface cooling by water, and a thin film on the liquid surface. Throw range is 4-6 m with 60-90 s discharge. Applications: maintenance workshops, small fuel stores, fuel stations, paint shops, and plants with flammable liquids. A substantive difference from water extinguishers: foam handles Class B (liquids) which water cannot; versus dry powder: foam leaves no powder residue, so cleanup is easier. A technical note: prohibited on live electrical fires (shock risk from the water-based foam). Specifications follow NFPA 10, EN 3-7, and EN 1568.
