Water Extinguishers
Water Extinguishers are built specifically for Class A fires (ordinary combustibles — paper, wood, textiles). They work by absorbing heat through evaporation and cooling the fuel surface. Common sizes are 6 and 9 L, with stored-pressure or cartridge designs. Not suitable for oil or electrical equipment fires, where their use is prohibited.

About this category
Water extinguishers are the oldest and simplest portable extinguishers, relying on water's cooling effect on the fuel. The design: a steel or stainless cylinder (red per standard) holding 6 or 9 L of water with a propellant pressure source (nitrogen or compressed air at 12-15 bar). Variants differ: stored-pressure holds the propellant with the water; cartridge-operated carries the gas in a separate cartridge activated at use. Throw range is 6-10 m with 50-90 s discharge time. Wetting agents are sometimes added to improve penetration in fibrous materials. Applications: offices, schools, warehouses with paper stock, residential facilities, and plants with solid combustibles. A critical technical note: water extinguishers are prohibited on electrical fires (shock risk), oil and grease fires (may cause a violent steam explosion), and active metal fires (reactive with sodium and magnesium). Maintenance: monthly pressure checks, internal inspection every 5 years, and periodic hydrostatic testing per the local code, cylinder type and manufacturer's guide (5 years for water extinguishers under NFPA 10). Specifications follow NFPA 10, EN 3, and SBC 801 (Saudi Building Code). Mounted so the top of the unit is no higher than about 1.5 m above the floor (units up to 18 kg under NFPA 10).
