Inert Gas Systems
Inert Gas Systems use mixtures of nitrogen and argon (IG-55) or with added CO2 (IG-541), reducing oxygen below the combustion threshold; an approved system design, pre-discharge warnings, evacuation procedures and an oxygen-depletion risk review are required. They differ from CO2 by lower relative hazard when correctly designed, and from halogenated agents by zero ozone-depletion (ODP) and global-warming (GWP) potential, since they are naturally occurring atmospheric gases.

About this category
Inert gas systems are a modern environmental solution for total-flooding gas suppression. The design: banks of high-pressure cylinders (200-300 bar) holding a mixture of natural gases (nitrogen and argon with optional CO2), high-strength steel piping, carefully distributed discharge nozzles, an intelligent detection system, and flow-control valves. Main types: IG-55 (50% N2 + 50% Ar), IG-541 (52% N2 + 40% Ar + 8% CO2), IG-100 (100% N2), and IG-01 (100% Ar). Suppression mechanism: reduce oxygen from 21% in air below the threshold for most combustion at the design concentration, with pre-discharge alarm, prompt evacuation and an oxygen-depletion risk review. Operating sequence: detection → alarm → 10-30 s evacuation delay → discharge in 60 s (slower than FM-200) → concentration held for 10 minutes. Key advantages: zero GWP, zero ODP (natural atmospheric gases), relative occupant safety with prompt evacuation, no residue, and no acidic decomposition products. Applications: data centers, telecom facilities, laboratories, museums, offshore platforms, renewable-energy facilities, and sites with strict environmental requirements. A substantive difference from FM-200/Novec 1230: inert gases are more environmentally benign but need more cylinders and higher pressure (lower density), and personnel must not re-enter the space after discharge until it has been ventilated and oxygen levels verified. Approval and acceptance documentation varies by model and application; review the product documentation and project requirements when specifying.
