Gas Suppression Systems
Gas Suppression Systems serve zones where water would cause more damage than the fire itself, such as server rooms, data centers, laboratories, and archives. The category includes FM-200 (HFC-227ea) systems, Novec 1230 systems, CO2 suppression, and inert-gas systems (IG-55/IG-541). Each agent differs in extinguishing mechanism, human safety, and environmental impact.

About this category
Gas suppression systems extinguish fires through different mechanisms. FM-200 absorbs combustion heat from the flame and is safe for human occupancy at design concentrations, though it is a greenhouse gas with a high global-warming potential (GWP about 3,220) and is subject to HFC phase-down restrictions in some markets. Novec 1230 is more environmentally friendly (GWP = 1), works the same way, and has a wider human-safety margin. CO2 systems extinguish by removing oxygen from the enclosure, are highly effective, but are life-safety hazardous because the extinguishing concentration is lethal — used only in unoccupied spaces with pre-discharge alarm. Inert gas systems (IG-55 as argon/nitrogen, IG-541 adding CO2) lower oxygen below the combustion level and require an approved design, pre-discharge alarm and evacuation procedures. Kitchen hood and water mist systems are listed under Special Hazard Suppression Systems. Every system requires engineering calculations for agent quantity and distribution, periodic cylinder inspection, and a pre-discharge alarm sequence. Specifications follow NFPA 2001, NFPA 12, and EN 15004.
