Novec 1230 Systems
FK-5-1-12 clean-agent systems (known by the trade name Novec 1230) use documented environmental indicators from the supplier (e.g. ODP = 0); check current supply availability. They differ fundamentally from FM-200 by being liquid at ambient conditions and vaporizing on discharge. Suited to facilities with strict environmental standards and modern data centers.

About this category
Novec 1230 systems represent a major advance in clean-agent suppression that aligns with sustainability requirements. The design: medium-pressure cylinders (25 bar) holding FK-5-1-12 (Dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one) in liquid state, steel distribution piping, misting discharge nozzles that vaporize the liquid on release, and a detection and control panel similar to FM-200 systems. Environmental profile: GWP = 1 (versus 3220 for FM-200), ODP = 0, a short atmospheric lifetime per supplier data; check the SDS and disposal requirements. 3M announced it would stop making Novec 1230 as part of its PFAS manufacturing exit by end-2025, so confirm commercial supply. Suppression mechanism: similar to FM-200 (mainly heat absorption with some chemical inhibition) with a stronger cooling effect from vaporization. Effective concentration 4.5-6% by volume (lower than FM-200 due to higher efficiency), NOAEL = 10%. Operating sequence: similar to FM-200 (detection → alarm → evacuation delay → discharge within 10 s). Applications: modern data centers with LEED standards, renewable-energy facilities, research laboratories, museums and heritage sites, offshore oil platforms with environmental requirements, and food and pharmaceutical facilities. A substantive difference from FM-200: a far better environmental profile, but usually higher cost. Standards: NFPA 2001, ISO 14520-5, and UL 2166. A technical note: agent quantity, cylinder count, and weight are set by the supplier's design calculations for each enclosure. Maintenance: similar to FM-200, with quarterly and semi-annual detection-system tests and periodic hydrostatic cylinder testing.
