Confined Space Gas Monitors

Confined Space Gas Monitors are specialized instruments for pre-entry atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring during work inside tanks, wells, tunnels, and hazardous industrial spaces. They differ from general detectors by including an integrated sampling pump that draws the atmosphere from inside the space before entry, so the space can be tested from a safe distance before the worker is exposed to any potential hazard.

About this category

Confined-space monitors solve a critical technical problem: how do you test an atmosphere that may kill anyone who enters? The design: a multi-gas instrument with an integrated internal pump or an attached external pump, a sampling hose of a length suited to the space, a weighted sampling probe that extends inside the space, a large display showing all live readings, high-visibility audible and visual alarms, and detailed data logging. Operating sequence: 1) bump-test and zero the instrument in fresh air, 2) lower the sampling hose into the space through the opening, 3) run the pump to draw air from the top, middle, and bottom of the space, allowing sufficient draw time for the hose length, 4) read and log concentrations, 5) make the entry/no-entry decision, 6) during work the entrant wears the same instrument for continuous monitoring. Typical mix: O2, LEL, H2S, CO. Applications: refinery and depot tank entries, sewer and manhole work, deep-well inspection, ship-tank entry, mining and excavation inspection, and underground utility inspection. A substantive difference from ordinary portable detectors: a confined-space monitor includes a sampling pump for remote testing; an ordinary detector only tests the air immediately around it. A critical technical note: confined-space entry needs a complete system — the detector + permit-to-work + a dedicated rescue team — not the instrument alone.
