Portable Gas Detectors
Portable Gas Detectors are personal or hand-carried instruments that stay with the worker during rounds or on entries into hazardous spaces. The category includes single-gas detectors, multi-gas detectors (4-5 gas), confined-space monitors with sampling pumps, portable area monitors, and PID detectors for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Selection follows the expected gas species and the operating environment.

About this category
Portable gas detectors differ in gas count and sensor technology. Single-gas detectors are lightweight (typically under 100 g) and read one gas such as H2S or CO — used by workers in specific-hazard areas. Multi-gas detectors (typically 4-gas: O2, LEL, CO, H2S, or 5-gas with VOC) monitor the full atmosphere from one unit and are used on oil platforms, in laboratories, and in chemical industries. Confined-space monitors include a sampling pump that draws air from inside the space through a 3-10 m probe before entry and are mandatory for confined-space work. Portable area monitors are larger and are placed in the work area to monitor the air at their location, with audio-visual alarms for multiple workers. PID detectors use UV light to ionize VOCs and detect them at trace concentrations — used at leak sites and in environmental investigations. Sensor life (typically 2-5 years) and replacement requirements vary with use. Bump testing and calibration follow the manufacturer's schedule, the site programme and test results. Specifications follow ISA 92 and EN 60079.
