PID VOC Detectors

PID (Photoionization) Detectors use a UV lamp to ionize volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a drawn air sample, measuring their concentration at low ranges. They differ fundamentally from electrochemical detectors by detecting hundreds of different VOCs with a single sensor.

About this category

PID detectors are an advanced technology for detecting organic compounds that conventional electrochemical detectors miss. Scientific principle: a UV lamp radiates ultraviolet light that ionizes organic molecules passing through it, producing ions that travel between two electrodes and generate a current proportional to concentration. The design: a small portable instrument or a module within a multi-gas unit, with a replaceable UV lamp, advanced signal processing, a sampling pump, and a reference air system. Detected compounds typically include: benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX), formaldehyde (depending on PID lamp energy), acetone, solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, evaporated fuel products, printing and paint materials, and cleaning agents. Applications: contaminated-soil sites, petroleum and petrochemical industry, paint shops, printing, chemical manufacturing, refining, indoor air quality assessment, hydrocarbon-spill cleanup, and HAZMAT teams. A unique advantage: detection of many compounds with one sensor without needing to know which compound is present (a 'total VOC' reading). A technical note: a PID gives a total VOC reading and does not identify individual compounds; identification requires an analytical technique such as GC/MS. The appropriate lamp energy differs by application — review the product documentation and site requirements when selecting.
