Mercury Spill Kits
Mercury Spill Kits are specialized to collect scattered mercury droplets from various work sources and prevent their evaporation as toxic vapor into the surrounding environment. They hold materials that chemically bind mercury (amalgamation) to fix it, collection tools, and mercury-vapor neutralizing materials. Essential in fluorescent-lamp break facilities, laboratories, dentistry, and specialized recycling facilities.

About this category
Mercury kits solve a unique technical challenge: mercury is a liquid metal with special characteristics. Mercury characteristics: a liquid at room temperature; evaporates slowly but continuously, producing a colorless, odorless toxic vapor; fragments into multiple tiny droplets on falling; neurotoxic and nephrotoxic; accumulates in body tissues and is not readily excreted; a permanent health hazard if not fully collected. Typical contents: a mercury-vapor absorber (a black sulfur-treated material that binds mercury to form stable, non-volatile mercury sulfide), mercury-specific absorbent pads and powders (sulfur-treated polypropylene), mercury sponges (a special sponge that picks up tiny droplets), collection tools (small scrapers, a soft brush, suction tubes, a tightly-sealed collection vial), a UV lamp for shadowing inspection to reveal mercury droplets, PPE (thick nitrile gloves, mercury-vapor specialized mask, sealed goggles), and a portable mercury-vapor detector (in advanced kits). Applications: fluorescent-lamp break facilities (a major source), laboratories (thermometers and mercury instruments), dentistry (older amalgam fillings), electrical industry (old mercury switches), medical manufacturing, refineries exposed to fuel mercury, chloralkali facilities, and mining. A substantive difference from universal or chemical kits: mercury needs chemical amalgamation to be fixed — universal kits do not stop evaporation, so mercury vapor remains a permanent hazard. A critical technical note: do not use a household vacuum or steam cleaner on mercury — both spread mercury into the air.
