Overview

Any untreated release leads to environmental contamination, hazardous worker exposure, and significant cleanup costs. The products in this category are designed to contain spills quickly, absorb them before they spread, and keep released material away from drains and soil.

Product Types

The category covers sorbents in three classes: Oil-Only, which absorbs oil while repelling water; Chemical, which absorbs acids, bases, and solvents; and Universal, for common liquids compatible with the product per the manufacturer's compatibility chart. It also covers spill-response kits in sizes (10 L, 50 L, 95 L), rubber drain seals for immediate drain closure, flexible and rigid containment booms, secondary containment pallets under drums and tanks, flammable- and chemical-storage cabinets, and spill-response carts.

Selection Factors

Sorbents are chosen by liquid type (petroleum, acid, solvent), the volume of a credible release, and required pickup rate. Spill kits are sized against the largest container on site and the distance to the response source. Storage cabinets are chosen against NFPA 30 for flammables and EN 14470-1.

Difference from Gas Detection

Spill Control handles liquid releases while Gas Detection senses vapor releases; both are essential layers in a facility's environmental-safety program.

Standards Note

Products align with EPA requirements for hazardous materials, OSHA 1910.120 (HAZWOPER), NFPA 30 for flammable liquids, and EN 14470-1 for hazardous-materials cabinets. Specifications vary by product and brand.
