Cooling Vests

Cooling Vests help reduce heat strain on workers, depending on the technology and conditions and alongside rest breaks, hydration and exposure assessment, in hot or humid environments during long work shifts. They differ fundamentally from traditional thermal clothing by cooling the body rather than trapping heat. Technologies: evaporative, ice or PCM (phase change material), air cooling, or external water-circulation cooling.

About this category

Heat stress is an industrial health hazard that can cause heat stroke and death in workers exposed to high temperatures for long hours. Cooling vests help reduce heat strain with five technologies: evaporative cooling, where the vest holds an absorbent material soaked with water that slowly evaporates and cools the body — economical and simple but requires re-wetting every 2-5 hours, and its effectiveness drops sharply in high humidity. Ice cooling using pre-chilled ice or gel pockets — highly effective but requires replacement after 1-3 hours. Phase Change Material (PCM) such as paraffin melts at a defined temperature (typically 28°C), absorbing body heat during the phase transition for 2-4 hours. Air vortex cooling uses a compressed-air line to generate cool airflow inside the vest — effective but tethered by hose. Water circulation cooling runs chilled water through fine tubes in the vest from an external cooling unit — the highest performance option. Applications: steel manufacturing and casting, construction in hot climates (Saudi Arabia, Gulf, Africa), welding in enclosed spaces, glass industry, firefighting teams, and power furnace maintenance. A technical note: cooling vests do not replace specialized PPE (FR, chemical); they are worn as an additional layer. No widely adopted single standard covers cooling vests; refer to model performance data and manufacturer instructions.
