Flame-Resistant Clothing

Flame-Resistant (FR) Clothing is made of fibers that self-extinguish once the flame source is removed, protecting the body from burns in thermal incidents. It differs fundamentally from arc-flash suits because FR garments must not be used for arc-flash protection unless they carry a suitable arc rating. Materials: Nomex, modacrylic, FR-treated cotton, or composite fibers.

About this category

FR clothing is designed not to feed flames and not to melt onto burned skin, unlike ordinary cotton or synthetic garments that keep burning and cause deep injury. Materials differ in resistance mechanism: Nomex (meta-aramid) is inherently flame-resistant and does not melt; its service life follows manufacturer data and laundering instructions. Modacrylic (modified acrylic) chars under heat and forms an insulating layer. FR-treated cotton is chemically treated for flame resistance; rely on the manufacturer's documented service life and wash-cycle rating. An important technical note: FR garments must not be used for arc-flash protection unless they carry a suitable arc rating (cal/cm²); that is the role of rated arc-flash suits. Likewise, FR status alone does not establish suitability for molten-metal splash; a documented rating suited to the metal and exposure is required (e.g. code D or E under EN ISO 11612), and aluminized clothing may be needed for intense radiant exposure. EN ISO 11612 rates several codes: A (limited flame spread), B (convective heat), C (radiant heat), D (molten aluminium splash), E (molten iron splash), F (contact heat). Applications: oil and gas, refineries, welding and casting, steel manufacture, and industrial firefighting teams. Specifications follow EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), NFPA 2112 (flash fire), and ASTM F1930.
