Carabiners & Connectors

Carabiners & Connectors link the components of the fall-protection system: harness, lanyard, and anchor. Variants: steel connectors (typically higher capacity), aluminum carabiners (lighter), with a minimum strength set by the standard (e.g. 22.2 kN on the major axis under ANSI Z359.12), and loops and shackles for defined applications. Self-closing double-locking types are required to prevent accidental release.

About this category

Connectors are the potential failure points in a fall-protection system, so specifications vary with use. Connector types: snap hooks with large openings for easy attachment to D-rings; carabiners in oval or D-shape for general use; rebar hooks with wide openings for attachment to reinforcing steel. Locking mechanisms: single-action self-closing (one press to open — now prohibited); double-action self-closing (two independent movements to open — the current standard); triple-action self-closing for critical applications. Materials: steel (heavier, 25-50 kN capacity), aluminum (lighter, 22-30 kN capacity, preferred for frequent use). Standard strength is at least 22.2 kN on the major axis and 7 kN on the minor (side-loaded) axis. An important technical note: connectors are substantially weakened under cross-axis or three-way loading; linking two connectors directly together ('daisy chain') is prohibited because it can cause lateral opening. Connectors are replaced immediately on any crack, damage, or wear. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.12, EN 362, and CSA Z259.12.
