Restraint Lanyards

Restraint Lanyards prevent a worker from reaching the fall edge in the first place, eliminating the need for fall arrest. They differ fundamentally from shock-absorbing lanyards by being short and not having a shock-absorbing element. Length is precisely calculated to keep the worker clear of the edge. Suited to flat roofs with defined edges, and preferred as the first line of defense.

About this category

The restraint principle is fundamentally different from fall arrest: instead of handling a fall when it happens, restraint prevents the worker from reaching the hazard zone. The design: a short webbing lanyard at a defined length (typically 1-2 m) with no shock absorber because a fall is not credible. Example: a worker on a roof, anchor 3 m from the fall edge, restraint lanyard 2 m = the worker reaches 1 m short of the edge and cannot fall. Benefits: no impact forces, no fall-clearance calculation, greater freedom of movement. It differs from a wider Travel Restraint system that combines restraint with a moving anchor. An important technical note: restraint works only when the anchor is fixed and the length is accurately calculated; any error or worker movement to another edge converts the scenario into a real fall without protection. For uncertain cases, full fall arrest is preferred. Applications: flat-roof maintenance, clean-up on tank tops with defined edges, inspection work on organized roofs. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.3 and EN 354.
