Lanyards
Lanyards connect the harness to the anchor point, and their function varies between restraint, positioning and fall arrest. The category includes shock-absorbing lanyards, restraint lanyards, positioning lanyards, twin-leg lanyards for continuous ascent, and adjustable lanyards. Lanyard selection follows the intended function: preventing access to the edge, or arresting a fall in progress.

About this category
A lanyard is a critical component that determines how much force the body feels during a fall. Shock-absorbing lanyards contain a tear-away webbing or progressive-deployment mechanism that absorbs fall energy and limits the arresting force on the body to below the limit set by the applicable standard (e.g. 6 kN under EN 355). Typical length is 1.8 m, and total fall clearance must be computed before use. Restraint lanyards are shorter and do not absorb shock because they prevent the worker from reaching the fall edge in the first place. Positioning lanyards hold the worker in place to work hands-free on vertical structures such as towers and scaffolds. Twin-leg lanyards keep the worker attached to at least one point at all times when moving between anchors (the 100% tie-off principle). Adjustable lanyards fine-tune length to minimize free-fall distance. Snap hooks and carabiners on every lanyard must be self-closing and self-locking (double-action) to prevent accidental release; non-locking snap hooks are not used. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.13, EN 354, and EN 355. Pre-use inspection of webbing and connectors is mandatory.
