Lifeline Shock Absorbers

Lifeline Shock Absorbers absorb fall energy to protect the cable and anchor points from high impact forces. They typically install at the end of a horizontal lifeline before the anchor, reducing the force transmitted to the anchor as set by the engineering design and component limits. Used in many permanent systems to protect the building structure from unexpected loads.

About this category

When a worker falls on a horizontal lifeline, large impact forces travel through the cable to the anchors and into the building structure. Without a shock absorber, forces can exceed 20 kN and cause structural damage or cable failure. Lifeline shock absorbers solve this with a controlled deployment mechanism. The design: a metal device holding deployment elements (tear-stitch webbing, spring, or hydraulic cylinder) installed between the cable and the anchor. On a fall, the mechanism deploys progressively to absorb kinetic energy, capping the force transferred to the structure at a value set by the system's engineering design. Types: fixed energy absorbers (single-use, replaced after an event), resettable energy absorbers (can be re-armed after an event). Applications: many permanent HLL systems, as the design requires, high-risk work sites, work platforms in refineries and stations, and multi-story building roofs. An important technical note: in basic models the absorber deploys once; after an event it is fully replaced or reset depending on type. Pre-use visual inspection and annual certified inspection are mandatory. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.1 and EN 795 Annex A.
