Vertical Lifelines

Vertical Lifelines are ropes or cables stretched vertically for ascent and descent on ladders or structures. They work with a moving rope grab that allows free movement and locks on fall. They differ from SRLs in operation: some rope grabs are moved manually and others trail the worker automatically, so follow the model's operating method and the manufacturer's instructions.

About this category

Vertical lifelines provide continuous protection during ascent and descent on long ladders, towers, and vertical structures. The design: a kernmantle rope or steel cable 10-30 m long, anchored at a fixed top point and hanging down. The worker clips a moving rope grab (fall arrester) that glides on the rope with natural movement and locks on fall. Types: manual rope grabs that need manual repositioning, automatic rope grabs that glide freely with ascent and descent, and mechanical ascenders for technical climbing (sport or industrial), which are progression tools and not a substitute for a fall arrester. An important technical note: dynamic ropes differ from static; vertical lifelines and rope access use low-stretch static or semi-static rope (EN 1891), while dynamic rope is used only where the system specifies it. Applications: ascending telecom towers, climbing fixed ladders in refineries, climbing chimneys and vertical tanks, and industrial rope-access work on tall-building façades. A substantive difference from an SRL: the SRL retracts automatically with a built-in lock, while a vertical lifeline needs a rope grab that is moved manually or glides automatically. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.15 and EN 353-2.
