Laser Distance Meters
The Laser Distance Meters category covers electronic measuring instruments that project a laser beam onto a target surface and compute distance by the instrument's own optical measurement principle, used in installation and interior surveying environments. Models vary in measurement range and measurement accuracy depending on the device. Laser distance meters are not automatic substitutes for tape measures; each has its own appropriate application. Specifications are model-specific.

About this category
Laser distance meters use a laser/optical measurement system to determine distance according to the instrument design. The reading is displayed on an electronic screen according to the model design, and the unit options available differ between models. Laser distance meters differ in maximum range (the longest distance the device can measure), measurement accuracy (the error tolerance) and resolution. Range, accuracy and resolution must be distinguished: a device with a longer range is not necessarily more accurate than one with a shorter range. Depending on model, available functions may include area and volume calculation, tilt measurement, memory storage of readings, and connectivity to smart devices where provided. The fact that a device is electronic does not imply it is more accurate than a tape measure for every application: accuracy depends on the model specification and the measurement environment. Full surveying instruments such as total stations and theodolites, laser levels, industrial distance sensors for process control and ordinary tape measures are excluded from this category. Industrial buyers select laser distance meter models based on required range and accuracy, ambient lighting, surface reflectivity and site environmental protection requirements including dust and humidity exposure.
