Insulation Testers / Megger
Insulation Testers (Meggers) measure the insulation resistance of motors, cables, transformers and electrical installations by applying an elevated test voltage to a de-energised circuit. They differ from multimeters in their higher, dedicated test voltages for detecting insulation degradation; choose by test-voltage range, resistance measurement range, PI and DAR support, and power source (battery or hand-crank generator).

About this category
This class serves to measure equipment insulation resistance. Design details vary by model: test-voltage range defined in product specifications, resistance measurement range, test features (PI and DAR measurement), control system, display, power system (battery or hand-crank generator), and documented safety rating. Technical note: the insulation tester is a measurement tool within the electrical-safety arrangement and does not replace safe-work practices or de-energizing before testing. Technical distinction: the insulation tester differs from the ordinary multimeter in that it is dedicated to higher test voltages documented in product specifications, and a uniform rating is not assumed across the category. Uses: industrial-motor maintenance work, cable maintenance, transformer maintenance, electrical-installation testing, and power facilities. Procurement considerations: models may be compared on documented test-voltage range, resistance measurement range, supported features, safety rating, and application suitability. Model specifications are reviewed before selection.
