Welding Consumables
Welding Consumables are the materials and wear items used in welding, including filler metals that form the weld deposit, non-consumable tungsten electrodes and shielding gases. The category includes coated stick electrodes, MIG/MAG wires, TIG filler rods and tungsten electrodes, flux-cored wires, shielding gases (argon, CO2, Ar/CO2 blends, helium), and welding fluxes. Selection follows the base metal, required weld properties, and the welding process in use.

About this category
Consumables drive a large share of final weld quality. Stick (SMAW) electrodes are classified by AWS A5.1 for mild steel with codes such as E6013 (easy general use) and E7018 (low-hydrogen, high-strength for critical structural work), and by AWS A5.4 for stainless steel. Electrode choice follows required tensile strength, welding position, and current type (DC+/DC-/AC). MIG/MAG wires are coded ER70S-6 for carbon steel and ER308 for stainless, in diameters 0.6-1.6 mm selected against plate thickness and required deposition rate. TIG filler rods are hand-fed and coded ER70S-2 for carbon steel and ER5356 for aluminum. Shielding gases differ substantially in effect: pure argon for TIG and MIG aluminum, pure CO2 for MAG on carbon steel (economical but higher spatter), Ar-CO2 blends (75-25) for MAG on carbon steel with better quality and lower spatter, and helium added for thick aluminum to improve penetration. Brazing filler metals melt above 450°C without melting the base metal and join dissimilar metals; soldering takes place below 450°C. Specifications follow the AWS A5 series and EN ISO 14341 (which superseded EN 440).
