About this category
Confined space entry is one of the highest-risk operations in industry because several hazards combine: oxygen deficiency, toxic gases, difficult extraction, and communication limits. Rescue tripods set up over vertical entry openings and carry a manual or powered winch with 136-181 kg capacity for lowering and retrieving workers. Winched entry systems carry a self-retracting lifeline with lift function that both arrests falls and lifts a casualty. Retrieval wristlets and spreader bars are used with a full-body harness to lift the worker upright through narrow openings; confined-space harnesses themselves are listed under Harnesses in Fall Protection. Davit arms serve wall-adjacent openings where a tripod's wide base will not fit. Fall-protection davit systems install permanently above refinery and plant tank openings for recurring use. Before entry, a written entry permit, atmospheric testing inside the space, continuous ventilation, a surface attendant, and a documented rescue plan are mandatory. Specifications follow OSHA 1910.146, EN 795, and EN 1496.
