Shock-Absorbing Lanyards

Shock-Absorbing Lanyards carry a tear-away webbing or deployable fabric element that absorbs fall energy and limits the arresting force on the body to below the limit set by the applicable standard (e.g. 6 kN under EN 355). Designed for complete fall arrest, not for positioning or restraint. Typical length is 1.8 m with mandatory total free-fall-clearance calculation.

About this category

Shock-absorbing lanyards are the critical component that determines the arresting force on the body during a fall. The design uses an inner tear-stitch webbing pack that opens progressively on fall to absorb kinetic energy. The result: arresting force on the body is limited to the model's rated values (e.g. a 6 kN maximum under EN 355, and average/maximum arresting-force limits under ANSI Z359.13), versus much higher forces without a shock absorber. Designs vary: a simple single-leg lanyard, or a twin-leg lanyard that lets the worker move between two anchor points while staying always connected. Maximum free fall depends on the model approval and standard edition; some lanyards are rated for 1.8 m and others for free falls up to 3.6 m. Required clearance combines lanyard length, absorber deployment, worker height and a safety margin, and is calculated for each application from the model's manual and anchorage conditions; where clearance is insufficient, an SRL or another system may be needed as assessed by a competent person. An important technical note: a shock-absorbing lanyard is not used for positioning because the webbing may deploy under a steady load. Replace after any fall event and inspect visually before each use. Specifications follow ANSI Z359.13 and EN 355.
