Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) are advanced alternatives to conventional lanyards that provide shorter free-fall distance and fast lock-off under acceleration. An SRL works like a car seatbelt: it pays line in and out freely during normal movement and locks when acceleration exceeds a threshold. When anchored overhead, this design typically shortens free-fall distance to under 60 cm versus 1.8 m or more with shock-absorbing lanyards and is useful in limited clearance. Personal SRLs are lightweight (typically under 2 kg) and clip directly to the harness D-ring with 1.8-3 m of working range. Industrial SRLs are anchored overhead with 6 m to 30+ m of working range and serve many tasks. Leading-Edge SRLs are built for work directly above a fall edge such as a roof or opening; they include an additional shock absorber and cut-resistant webbing where the lifeline passes over the edge. Rescue-winch SRLs combine fall arrest with a lifting function to extract a fallen worker without waiting for other equipment.
